Aside from your eyes, which first impression characteristic do people usually remember about you? Think about it! A whiter, brighter smile equals youth and friendliness!
If you care about your look then, you need to take care of your teeth cause it brings out the brilliance of your smile.
There are many factors responsible for the changes in the color of the teeth.
* Tobacco usage- Habitual smoking and chewing can cause teeth discoloration.
* Food and Beverages - What you eat and drink can cause discoloration of the teeth because of the chromogenic agents in these products e।g tea, coffee, colas, red wines, potatoes, apples etc. * Advancing Age or Old Age - It is a natural process for your teeth to turn to yellow in old age.This is due to the gradual wearing away of the outer layer of enamel exposing the dentine as you advance in age.
* Diseases - Some heritable diseases are responsible for teeth discoloration e.g Amelogenesis imperfecta, Dentinogenesis imperfecta etc.
* Poor dental hygiene - Lack of personal care for the teeth is another vital factor i.e inadequate brushing and flossing of the teeth.
* Health medication - Medication given to children in their formative years such as antibiotics like tetracycline and doxycycline causes their teeth toacquire a yellow-brown stain.
* Excessive fluoride ingestion- This can be from toothpaste swallowing most especially in children.This action may lead to fluorosis-formation of a chalky-white patches or lines on teeth.
* Treatment - It has been discovered that some medical treatments such as chemotheraphy, head and neck radiation can cause teeth discoloration.
* Accidents- Broken tooth due to accident may turn dark later.
* Dental Care/Materials- Dental restoration materials such as silver sulfide is known to cast a grey-black color on teeth
